Job Description

Basic qualifications:
• PhD or equivalent experience and a good honours degree in life sciences or related discipline
• Significant expertise in Fluorescence microscopy/ confocal microscopy approaches, including quantitative analysis of images, with particular focus on the application of cell imaging techniques for novel biopharmaceutical products.
• Specialist expertise / experience in antibody / protein sub-cellular localisation and trafficking studies for both fixed and live samples, including labelling of antibodies with a variety of markers.
• Cell culture expertise for a wide variety of in vitro cell systems as well as experience in primary cell isolation / culture.
• Demonstrated expertise in the use of Flow cytometry approaches as well as interpretation of data.
• Demonstrated ability to label and isolate defined cell populations using FACS or bead based separation protocols.
• Ability to transfect mammalian cells using a variety of approaches.
• Ability to co-ordinate own activities across a number of diverse programs & projects
• Demonstrated strong communication and matrix team working skills, robust analytical skills for critical evaluation of scientific data as well as an enthusiastic ‘can do’ attitude to science.

Preferred qualifications:
Competency in some or all of the following areas will be an advantage:

• Excellent working knowledge of the biopharmaceutical drug discovery process, including both conventional monoclonal and novel antibody formats
• Basic molecular biology cloning techniques and / or Protein detection techniques such as Western blotting.
• Ability to build and run ELISA assays and interpret resulting data.
• Bioinformatic understanding / skills  
• Knowledge / experience of in vivo / ex vivo imaging approaches

Biopharm Discovery, part of the Biopharm R&D Unit, is a newly formed functional area, whose primary aim is to develop novel biopharmaceutical therapeutics against targets within key disease areas of commercial and strategic significance.

An exciting opportunity has arisen within Biopharm Discovery for a talented and committed academic / pharmaceutical research scientist who possesses a proven track record of success around cellular imaging approaches.  

As part of a team of highly skilled research biologists and reporting to the Team Leader, you’ll play a key role within Biopharm Discovery through taking on the intellectual and practical challenges of designing and executing bespoke imaging studies to evaluate and quantitate the cellular binding, turnover and intracellular fate of biopharms / target proteins.
